Charlestown Transfermation
Completed While a Project Manager at Meyer & Meyer Architects
After a fire damaged the top floor of this late 1800s two family townhouse, a two phase restoration and transformation reimagined the 4,000 square foot home as a cohesive single family residence. The project carefully balanced historic restoration with substantial programmatic upgrades, preserving the character of the original architecture while adapting it to contemporary living.
Original living and dining spaces, the main stair, and two fireplaces were restored, while a new kitchen improved functionality on the main level. Upper floors were refreshed with new flooring, trim, windows, and updated bathrooms, and the primary suite was expanded through the addition of a slate and copper dormer, creating space for a walk in closet. The exterior was also revitalized with new operable black cedar shutters that restored a historic element to the facade. A second phase converted the former garden level apartment into fully integrated living space, introducing a new stair tower that connects all levels and provides direct access to a renovated garage and roof deck. The garden level and basement were fully renovated, including new bedrooms, bathrooms, living spaces, upgraded mechanical systems, improved storage, and new access to the rear yard, completing the home’s transformation into a unified and functional residence.
